Artists We Love: Adrienne Antonson

rural small batch clothing by STATE the Label

STATE the Label, Lookbook

I have long admired the work of Adrienne Antonson through the work of her projects, STATE the Label and The Secret Catalogue. Antonson designs and produces small batch clothing that is sustainably made and created to last season to season.

Needing a change after art school in Charleston and a prestigious curating job, Antonson and her husband moved to Vashon Island, WA, an Alpaca Farm outside of Seattle, where eventually State the Label was born in 2010. After living in Brooklyn, NY for a few years (you can check out her Design*Sponge home tour here!), Antonson and her family moved to Thomson, GA, a teeny tiny town in eastern Georgia, where she continues to run her company, STATE the Label.

STATE’s Paint Summeralls

STATE the Label is primarily a clothing company, although from time to time other goods are designed and produced by STATE, such as blankets, rugs and other small home accessories. All of STATE’s clothing is handmade in the USA, in small batches, made in Thomson GA or in the New York Garment District. STATE’s pieces are the most successful when Antonson strikes a careful balance between creative whimsy and practicality. For me, STATE’s Paint Sumeralls are a perfect example of this–very unique and undeniably handmade, while also being comfortable, easy to wear, and flattering to a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Perfect.

One of the original items offered under the STATE the Label brand is STATE’s one-of-a-kind smocks. All of these smocks are made from repurposed men’s button-down shirts–a great way to reduce textile waste–and are made for creative albeit sometimes dirty jobs like painting, gardening, or ceramics. Although I would hazard to guess that they’re pretty comfortable and chic for lounging on the couch and watching Netflix as well. Each smock is made one at a time and is completely original.

The Secret Catalog

Antonson’s other project, The Secret Catalog, is a free print catalog featuring STATE items, as well as other handmade brands, curated by the Secret Catalogue team. It’s for members only but it’s also free, so if you’re interested in seeing what the winter Secret Catalog has to offer, you can sign up here!

I really enjoy watching Antonson navigate working and living in a small rural community, running a creative business and tending to a growing family. You can follow her on Instagram to see more bits and pieces of her life. Female entrepreneurs are incredibly inspiring and Antonson is definitely one to watch!
