Boutique Wallpaper: Flavor Paper

Features the marble inspired wallpaper called Fracture for the Inkling Collection made by Flavor Paper

Boutique wallpaper is having a moment, and one of my favorite studios, Flavor Paper, resides in my old neighboorhood in Brooklyn. I first discovered Flavor Paper wandering around my new neighborhood, Brooklyn Heights, and I caught a glimpse into a design studio on Pacific Street. It was an impressive two-story glass front building–but what really struck me was that you could peer into their printing studio, and the long fabric covered printing tables inside. I have always been a big fan of screen printing and it was surprising to me to see this set up in the residential neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights. I made a note of the name – Flavor Paper – and decided to look it up later.

Flavor Paper has been based in Brooklyn for the last fifteen years and has led the wallpaper revolution that we have been seeing in modern and chic interiors. Statement walls featuring limited run designs are their calling card. All of their papers are designed and printed in their Brooklyn studio (the very same one I saw that summer), incorporating both digital printing and hand silkscreening into their products.

Perhaps their signature paper, ‘B-A-N-A-N-A-S’, designed by Michael Angelo, is something truly unique to Flavor Paper. Advertised as a ‘scratch and sniff’ wallpaper, ‘B-A-N-A-N-A-S’ comes in four different colors; Scented White, Scented Cyan Chrome, Unscented Copper, and Unscented Silver. Decidedly pop art in inspiration, this paper, with it’s repeated pattern of half dropped bananas, can actually smell like (artificial) bananas! ‘B-A-N-A-N-A-S’, and it’s sister paper ‘Cherry Forever’ certainly got Flavor Paper quite a lot of press–including an interview on NPR–these novelty papers made a splash.

In their most recent collection, ‘Inkling’ there is not a scratch and sniff paper to be found, but they do offer a number of organic and nuanced marbleized papers. Using a combination of digital print, hand silkscreened latex print, and metallic powders, Flavor Paper created large-scale wall murals from detail photographs of traditional marble papers. Made to order, these floor to ceiling murals are a hybrid between a wallpaper and a piece of art. Offered in three grounds, and a handful of colorways.

Yay for Flavor Paper, and all of the boutique wallpaper companies turning walls into blank canvases for something spectacular!
